Emergence - Cathy Lu & Yulia Pinkusevich at Qualia Gallery

  • Qualia Contemporary Art 229 Hamilton Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94301 (map)

The title for Emergence takes its inspiration from the interplay between the words “emergence” and “emergency,” referencing environmental and spiritual themes through disparate practices that unite around the concept of transformation and the symbology of ritual smoke and cleansing flame. In their two-person exhibition, Cathy Lu and Yulia Pinkusevich propose ritual as a method for exploring and reflecting ways of being in a cultural and existential context.

Through organic ceramics and numinous paintings, the Bay Area artists employ inherited forms and ancient traditions as tools for reimagining what comes next. Fire, incense, mica, ash, and charcoal become materials of transformation, holding destruction and renewal in the same gesture.

An opening reception for Emergence will be held on March 7, 2026 from 4:00 to 6:00pm and the exhibition will be on view through May 2, 2026.

LUKAS FELZMANN AND YULIA PINKUSEVICH

Sunday, November 2nd, 5:00 pm
Bayfront Theater (BATS Improv) at Fort Mason

PhotoAlliance presents an evening with Lukas Felzmann and Yulia Pinkusevich, two artists who use photo-inspired installation, sculpture, and conceptual works to explore systems, culture, identity, and nature.

Felzmann, born in Zürich, Switzerland, uses photography and sculptural forms to examine the dynamics of landscape, ecology, and control—an approach reflected in his publications including Swarm and Gull Juju. Pinkusevich, born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, part fo the now ex-USSR, creates immersive drawings, paintings, and installations that probe psychological and ecological space, revealing the tension between constructed environments and elemental forces. Together, their work invites reflection on the fragile balance between human intention and the sentient rhythms of the world around us.

Teaching in Totalitarian Times

Sept. 27, 2025: noon - 4 p.m.

Description: Teaching in Totalitarian Times A Panel Discussion This panel explores the challenges and responsibilities of educators working within today’s political climate. As shifting policies, heightened censorship, and increasing pressures on academic freedom reshape classrooms, educators are forced to adapt in real time. Together, we will discuss how teachers and cultural workers navigate these constraints, how they create spaces of resistance and care, and how their practices can serve as acts of resilience and transformation. The conversation will highlight strategies for maintaining integrity, fostering critical dialogue, and cultivating agency for students and educators at a moment when education itself is under siege. Panelists: Cassondra Curiel (President, United Educators of San Francisco) Sergio De La Torre (Professor, University of San Francisco) Asma Kazmi (Professor, UC Berkeley) Mores McWreath (Professor, UC Berkeley) Greg Niemeyer (Professor, UC Berkeley) Yulia Pinkusevich (Professor, Mills College at Northeastern University) Moderated by Altair Salmon (Professor, Stanford University) 120710 Gallery (1207 Tenth St., Berkeley) September 27 | 12:00–1:00 PM This event marks the closing of Teaching Practice, an exhibition highlighting the creative practices of educators in the Bay Area.
